Nearly two weeks after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck southern Haiti, the death toll is still rising and survivors are in need of food, water and medical attention. Over 12,000 have been reported injured, and hundreds are still missing. The Haitian government has declared a one-month state of emergency.
Thousands of miles away, the Dixie and Caldor fires in California have been declared a major disaster by President Biden. The Caldor fire has burned more than 120,000 acres in 10 days, and the Dixie fire is the second largest on record in California, burning 745, 000 acres so far.
To help provide these communities with relief and recovery, Simpson Strong-Tie has donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund for the Haiti earthquake and $15,000 for the California wildfires.
The Red Cross network has provided more than 27 tons of materials such as shelter toolkits, tarps, buckets, blankets and mosquito nets and contributed over $300,000 to support Haiti Red Cross relief efforts. For more than 10 years, the American Red Cross has funded local staff in Haiti to support ongoing recovery from the 2010 earthquake.
In California and elsewhere, the Red Cross has been helping those affected by the over 90 wildfires that have been burning in the western US since June. They have opened 34 emergency shelters throughout western states, including California, Minnesota, Nevada and Washington. In addition to immediate relief like health services and emergency supplies, the Red Cross is providing financial assistance to families for food, clothing and other basic needs.
